The Role of the Private Sector in the NHS

Some services, such as dentistry, optical care and pharmacy, have always been provided by the private sector and, technically, most GP practices are private partnerships. All the drugs, supplies and equipment used by the NHS are privately provided.

Private sector opportunities

Since 1991, The NHS two-tier system, which consists of a private health sector serving a minority of the population and the NHS serving the majority, was blended with the introduction of an internal market for the NHS, constituting NHS purchasing bodies that contract services from a mixed pool of NHS-owned, for-profit, and non-profit providers, all of which serve NHS patients. The NHS accounts for 2013/4 show that £10 billion of the total NHS budget of £113 billion was spent on care from non-NHS providers.

Be part of the action

The NHS is becoming more dependent on the private providers as its own capacity comes under greater strain.

NHS leaders have instructed local managers to make greater use of the private sector, buying operations for NHS patients. Over the last decade the private sector has been given a chance to run a far greater range of NHS services and supplies.

Technology has provided another vehicle for the investment in the NHS through the provision of hi-tech equipment and digital services from surgical robotic equipment to digital apps. For most companies to be in the action is to stay competitive and innovate which means growth through funding.
